ZAKAT

Purify Your Wealth, Transform Lives
Your Zakat is not just charity. It is worship. It is hope. It is life-saving support for those in need.

The Spiritual Meaning of Zakat

Zakat is a sacred obligation and a divine mercy. It purifies our wealth and our hearts, freeing us from attachment to material possessions while uplifting those facing hardship. Through Zakat, we respond to Allah’s call for justice, compassion, and care for the most vulnerable.

When you give your Zakat, you are not only fulfilling a duty — you are becoming a source of hope for families in crisis

How Your Zakat Makes a Difference

Your Zakat supports families struggling to survive amid poverty, conflict, and displacement. Every dollar helps deliver assistance where it is needed most.

Food Parcels

Nutritious food packs containing rice, oil, lentils, chickpeas, and essential staples — enough to support a family for an entire month. Distributed in Lebanon, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Uganda, and Gaza

Emergency Relief

Rapid response aid delivered to areas affected by conflict and natural disasters, ensuring vulnerable families are not left behind.

Sustainable Support

Long-term assistance that helps communities rebuild, recover, and move toward self-reliance.

In 2023, thanks to generous Zakat donors, tonnes of food parcels were delivered to Gaza, providing vital relief to families facing severe hunger and hardship.

Preserving Dignity Through Cash Assistance

Whenever appropriate, Salam Charity distributes Zakat through direct cash assistance. This approach restores dignity and gives families the freedom to address their most urgent needs.

If your amount subject to Zakat al-Maal is not over the nisab, you do not owe Zakat al-Maal this year. However, you still owe Zakat al-Fitr ($10 per person in your household, including yourself).

Other Islamic Giving

Fidyah
Fidyah – Compassion for Those Unable to Fast
If a person is elderly, physically weak, or living with a long-term illness and is unable to fast during Ramadan, they are required to give Fidyah (if they have the means). Fidyah allows someone in need to be fed on your behalf, ensuring that no one is left hungry.
  • One missed fast: $8 CAD — provides two meals for a person in need
  • A full month of missed fasts: $255 CAD – feeds a person for the entire month
By paying Fidyah, you fulfil your duty to Allah while nourishing someone who may otherwise go hungry.
Kaffarah
Kaffarah – Expiation Through Feeding the Poor
For those who intentionally miss or break a fast without a valid reason, Kaffarah (expiation) is required. If one cannot fast for 60 consecutive days, they must feed 60 needy people two meals.
  • Feeding 60 people: £300
Kaffarah is an act of sincere repentance and mercy, turning a mistake into hope for the hungry.
